Abstract
The ocean margins play a disproportionally important role on air-sea CO2 fluxes and global carbon budget. The level of bio-limiting nutrients in the upper ocean constrains the primary productivity and export production, subsequently determining ocean capability of sequestering atmospheric CO2. Ocean margins are thus intrinsically characterized by higher gradients of variations in almost all chemical and biological parameters and stronger variability in time. These factors increase the complexities and difficulties of the biogeochemical studies in ocean margins. The South China Sea (SCS), the largest marginal sea of the North Pacific, is such a complex system. Based on multiple approaches, including field observations, historical data reanalyzing and a three-dimensional coupled physical-biogeochemical model, I will present the spatial and seasonal variations of carbon and nutrients and their controlling mechanisms, and the subsequent biogeochemical implications in the SCS.
