Abstract:
Coral reefs, the most species-rich and productive ecosystem in the ocean, are threatened by the accelerated global climate and environmental changes. A thorough understanding of the relationship of coral and the endosymbiotic algae living with the coral tissues is a key to predict the future of coral reefs. We first used the fast growing coral white tip as a new model system to illustrate how coral maintains such homeostasis in different part of tissues under health condition. We also conducted a field study during a coral bleaching event in Hong Kong waters. Here I will share results integrating multiple approaches including 3D imaging, transcriptomic, meta-sequencing, in-situ measurement of coral metabolism in our studies. I will also introduce environmental sample processor and its potential application in coral study.
